Heiankyo Alien is a puzzle-action game where players control a guard tasked with trapping aliens inside a grid-based city by digging holes and sealing them in before they can escape. The action takes place on a simple top-down field where both movement and environmental manipulation are equally important for survival. Each round becomes a tense cycle of creating traps while avoiding being caught by the roaming aliens.

Gameplay focuses on digging holes in pathways, luring aliens into them, and then quickly filling the holes back in before they escape or the player is caught. Timing and positioning are critical, since poorly placed traps can become hazards for the player instead. As difficulty increases, alien movement becomes faster and less predictable, forcing more strategic placement and quicker reactions.
